Long Neck Karen

Long Neck Karen : To some it can be a strange experience visiting a group of people as a tourist attraction. There are numerous debates about the rights and wrongs of this type of tourism, but the fact is that countless people visit these (often Burmese) tribes who see tourism as their key source of income. The villages are actually refugee camps and people visit to see woman wearing heavy brass rings which make their necks appear very long. The reason for this behaviour is lost in history, but some believe the rings saved women from attacks by tiger. Whatever the reason, lots of people venture out to the villages to see the women for themselves. Some of the villages you can visit include Hoy Sen Thao (which is a short distance by boat from Ban Huay Deua pier) and Nai Soi.

How to get there: Many people approach trips to Long Neck Karen Villages as a tour, and in many respects this certainly is the most convenient way to deal with it. Tours pick up from most major hotels, and in fact are likely to pick you up from many guesthouses as well.

Pai Elephant Riding

They are happy, friendly and well trained. With us you can enjoy elephant riding, rafting and variety of trekking and sightseeing tours. Most of my activities plan for minimum 2 people, to meet your specific needs and arrange individual packages. My elephants have been used by my family for logging and as part of a show football team in the past and I played with them as a kid and we grew up together. You can easily climb up the elephant’s leg or thrunk onto her back and my elephants are gentle and safe to play with. They will happily greet and cuddle you, especially if you give them food and they can pick things up to give to you - they are well known for their playfulness especially in the river. We give them freedom of the jungle when they are not required at the camp, which keeps them happy and content. We offer you a variety of options including riding from 1 - 3 hours and you can choose to ride them with seat or without a seat . A 2 or 3 hour ride is much nicer because you go through the jungle and down to the river to play, shower and swim with them - believe me, this is an unforgettable experience!

Pai Rafting

Pai rafting is most favourite activity in Pai. With an approximate length of 180 km, and width of 30 ms, the Pai River is the biggest and longest river in Mae Hong Son. This challenges the adventurous traveler to raft along this river and three most suitable points are recommended. They are:

1. Source of the River to Amphoe Pai: Starting from Huai Chang Kaeo, six hours should cover the 16 km from Amphoe Pai to Wiang Nua Bridge or Ban Chomphon near Amphoe Pai. Most suitable period for rafting is between October-March and 2 weeks prior booking is recommended through the travel agents of Mae Hong Son.

2. From Amphoe Pai to Amphoe Muang: Starting from Ban Mo Paeng, 30 km from Amphoe Pai to Ban Pang Mu in Amphoe Muang. This route is about 70 km long and takes at least 5 days of rafting. The water levels differ greatly at one point on the Pai River and it may be necessary to change rafts at one point.
3. From Amphoe Muang to the border of Thailand and Myanmar: Starting from Ban Huai Dua, Tambon Pha Bong, about 6 km from Amphoe Muang to the border at Ban Nam Phiang Din.

Normally this section of Pai River is more enjoyable to cruise along by the long-tailed motor boat which only takes 2-3 hours returned trip or trekking on elephant back instead of rafting since the nature and scenery both sides are fascinated and beautiful. Contact for boat cruise, accommodation and trekking through major hotels and resorts or travel agents in Mae Hong Son.
